"The global situation we live in is of high complexity, with problems as severe as a slow economic recovery, disparity and uncertain; inequity and inequality; Climate change; Migration and humanitarian crisis."

The great global challenge is that these problems are interrelated. Overcoming them requires more and more actions and policies that transcend national borders. Hence the challenges of multilateralism and the need to modernize their institutions, their methods of work, their relevance and efficiency.

The work of María Fernanda Espinosa at the head of the United Nations General Assembly will focus on the following points.




Reforms of the United Nations system should be implemented and ensuring agility and effectiveness to meet the objectives. This will make the UN more efficient and relevant to the most pressing needs of the planet and its inhabitants and equip it to fulfil the objectives of its constituent charter on its three pillars: peace and security, development and human rights.


The world continues to face an environmental and climatic crisis, which is why it is essential to move forward in the implementation of the Paris Agreement to consolidate its work programmed. It is vital to act to ensure a more stable and safe climate for all.


Integration, cooperation and the Union of peoples as a fundamental thing for peaceful coexistence and the development of nations. Priority is given to disarmament and commitments made in favor of peace and security, which are part of its permanent work agenda.


Gender equality is a priority in its agenda. One cannot think of sustainable development and the construction of peaceful societies if one leaves out half of the population that are women.

Her work focuses on phasing out all forms of discrimination against Women, defending women's right to participate in public life.

It will work to promote women's participation in decision-making processes as it is key to breaking the cycle of discrimination, exclusion and poverty in which they live. Women need to be able to speak in their own voice, actively participate in the decision-making processes that concern their lives.



The UN is the strongest and most universal tool of multilateralism. The main human rights instruments have been born from their bosom, to defend and protect the rights of migrants and refugees, to banish xenophobia and to implement inclusion policies for these people who are in a state of vulnerability.

Its current agenda includes the adoption of the Global pact for safe, orderly and regular migration.



Decent work encompasses society's yearnings and dreams for access to productive employment that generates fair income, workplace safety and social protection for families, which in turn can be developed in the personal and social spheres. Decent work must encourage freedom for individuals to express their opinions and to achieve the common good of all.


With more than twenty years working for non-profit organizations, they have been able to focus their work on defending the rights of children, of people with disabilities; of gender-based violence, to protect all people from racial discrimination; of torture; of enforced disappearances, this situation of vulnerability places these people at a disadvantage with respect to the full exercise of their rights and freedoms. The claim, validity, enjoyment and exercise of the human rights of the people in a state of vulnerability, implies the commitment of all starting from premises of equality that guarantee the rights of all people.

Ecuador has the privilege and responsibility of having the fourth woman in the world to occupy the presidency of the General Assembly of the UN and the first Latin American woman, in a participatory and transparent election.
