María Fernanda Espinosa was elected president of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly with 128 votes: a clear victory for Ecuador and for women. She is the fourth woman to preside that principal organ, and the first Latin American woman in doing so.
"I deeply appreciate the vote of confidence that you have placed in Ecuador to preside over this Assembly; I thank the most generous expressions of support and confidence from the countries of my beloved region, Latin America and the Caribbean and from all the regions of the world."
María Fernanda Espinosa,
President-Elect of the 73rd UN General Assembly
Representatives from all nations showed their support and congratulations to the new President.
